Read this instead of ACOTAR
It is no secret that I do not like Sarah J Maas. And for those of you who are unfamiliar with why, it is primarily because soon after the death of Breonna Taylor, Sarah J Maas took an opportunity to use advocacy for Breonna to help promote this series. I have been told there are representation issues as well, but it was Breonna that turned me against Maas.
With that said, here are two series' that were written by women of color that I think are more worthy of taking up space on your shelves!
_**Halfling Saga (Melissa Blair): **_The Halfling Sage follows a half-elf who has spent her entire life forced into servitude to the king, as his most useful spy and deadliest assassin. When a mysterious figure named the shadow starts working against the King, she is tasked with hunting him down and killing him. Only, the King doesn't know that Keera has never been ok with the life he's forced her into. This story is filled with the same fae-magic, politics, war, mystery and death that ACOTAR is, but with the added bonus of a woman of color at the helm...instead of a racist.
_**Queens Red Guard (Isabelle Olmo): **_Isabelle gave us one of the best political intrigues of our generation. When I tell you this series is what game of thrones could have been, I need you to hear me. The first book in the series follows an Afro-latine woman whose husband has been killed while actively rebelling against the King. And in order to save the realm and put the rebellion to bed, Almire decides to...well...put the King to bed. She proposes a peace treaty, sealed with their marriage, and must navigate her new role as the Queen of the very Kingdom her husband died fighting to rebel against. In addition to her own story, she is also surrounded by a group of incredible women-warriors, each of whom is centered in future books in the series.
If you've read these books, let me know what you thought! If not, go ahead and give em a try!!
