Review: Broken Earth by NK Jemisin

Imagine a world that has fallen apart so many times that humanity has forgotten what it means to dream about the future.

That is the world that Essun, Damaya, and Syenite were born into.

After a cataclysmic event centuries before, the world of The Stillness was thrust into a cycle of never ending seasons that threaten to destroy everything as they know it. The world's climate has been irreversably damaged and now humanity is subjected to apocalyptic event after apocalyptic event, leaving humanity in a constant scramble to survive. And now, they are facing a season so catalysmic that it might just be the final end of the world.

These three women, in different points of their lives and with different immediate responsibilities, fight to survive in a world quickly falling apart. They must not only figure out how to navigate an already crumbling society, but they must wrestle with their own part in trying to prevent the end of the world.

This is a post-climate disaster dystopian fantasy that forces readers to wrestle with where we are headed as a people and how we have allowed our relationship with the earth to become toxic, abusive and... ultimately...world-ending.

The Broken Earth trilogy fits the same mold as the great Octavia Butler's work and I truly believe that it should be a must read for everyone who cares about the future of humanity.

As a Millenial, my entire life has been watching the world fall apart. So this series spoke to me in ways I can't even begin to describe. It forced me to wrestle with the future, and with what choices I have in front of me to maybe prevent the end we all see coming.
