What is Cry, Voidbringer about?

Imagine having to fight for a country that stole you from your home and forced you to become a warrior in their army, while fully believing they are justified in oppressing you because they, themselves, are fighting against their own oppression.

That is the story of Cry, Voidbringer.

Hammer was been fighting for the Queen of Ashvi for most of her life. In fact, that’s all she’s ever known. And for the most part, she has accepted her fate. Her focus now is only on one thing: staying alive. She fights because she has no choice, but she fights well because she wants to stay alive.

But when her duties lead her across the path of a young girl with supernatural powers, she knows it is her duty to prepare that little girl for the same fight she has spent her entire life forced to fight in. But something in her just can’t do it. She wants more for Viri. Ignoring every surival instinct she has, she decides that she is going to save that little girl from becoming a weapon in the hands of the Queen. Even knowing that her power could change the course of the war...and maybe help end her own suffering.

Now, I’m not going to tell you what methods she ends up using to fight for her, or whether she ends up being successful, but here is what I will tell you:

This story is filled with very big questions.

  • Who are the actual victims of war?
  • How do you fight for justice when even those fighting for liberation are oppressing you?
  • Is it better to fight for change within broken systems, or to tear them down and start over?
  • What does actual power look like? And who does it serve?
  • How does imperialism impact and shape the ethnic identities of its victims?
  • How do we fight for liberation without losing sight of the voices of those who will suffer the most in that struggle?

I have read a lot of really heavy books in my lifetime, and Cry, Voidbringer holds up to the best of them. I knew I was in love with this story from the very first chapter and I cannot wait to share this book with the world!

I just finished reading through the second draft of the book and let me tell you... it is shaping up to be a game changing book. I seriously cannot wait to see it in print. And even more importantly, I can't wait to see what else Elaine Ho brings into the world!

I truly believe this book is going to be talked about alongside books like Fifth Season by NK Jemisin, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler and Poppy War by RF Kuang. Which is why I wanted to make sure you knew every opportunity you have to be more involved.

  • When the book is available for pre-order, I will be sharing that with you first, and asking for your help in spreading the word about the book! So make sure you are paying attention to your emails. You'll also be receiving discounts for the special edition when it is ready for purchase!
