Blood Justice: 200 pages in
I am half way done with Blood Justice by Terry Benton-Walker, and I wanted to share my progress with you! Buckle up!
Blood Justice _is the sequel to Terry's 2023 book _Blood Debts, which follows twin New Orleans witches Clement and Christina--who are the newest generation of witches in a dethroned royal family. In Blood Debts, the twins fight to uncover the traitor in their community who helped frame their grandmother for murder in order to steal her throne. _**Blood Justice _starts where _Blood Debts. _Their mother, who was on the brink of death at the start of _Blood Debts **_is now sitting her deceased mother's throne and the twins focused on fixing the wrongs that were committed during their fight for justice.
For Clement, that means saving his boyfriend from a mishandled spell (it's deeper than that, but I don't want to spoil anything). And Cristina...well let's just say that Cristina has a list of everyone who had a hand in harming her family, and she's delivering justice as she sees fit.
Ok, for my thoughts.... _yall... this book is something different. Cristina reminds me of Ikenna (Blood Gifts Duology, by Nia Davenport). She knows she is on the right side of justice and she will do whatever it takes to make sure everyone else ends up on the right side of justice too. _
_This is not the kind of story that wrestles with morality and good vs evil. This is the kind of story where Black people are facing down their oppressors and making sure they know that their days of being in charge are _**OVER. **
_But perhaps the most important element to this story, for me, is the way it was INTENTIONALLY and BRILLIANTLY written for a Black audience. It is clear from the very first sentence of the very first page that Terry was writing this story to a diaspora of people who have had our gifts and our futures stolen from us, who are tired of waiting for them to be returned. This book speaks to the Black community's desperate call for justice and reminds us that the futures that were stolen from us are not out of reach. _
_It is rare to pick up a book that speaks to our __**anger **__as well as this book, and I'm here for it. _
Can't wait to finish the book and see where it takes me. I spoke with Terry last week, and he warned me that I won't be happy about it. So stay tuned. lol
Also, I will be interviewing Terry for an upcoming podcast episode. If you have any questions for him, please let me know!!!
